What is an LRS¶
An LRS or Learning Record Store is a repository for collecting learning statements generated by user activity in interacting with learning content that is hosted via a learning management system, company intranet, or face-to-face activity.
Most modern applications look more or less like this:
xAPI, also known as Experience API or Tin Can, is a standard for expressing learning content so that it can be communicated across and understood by multiple systems.
xAPI is the successor to the SCORM protocol or Shareable Course Object Reference Model originally developed by ADL. Many organisations still rely on SCORM-based learning content, which has some limitations. For instance, SCORM cannot track face-to-face learning activities.
Most learning management systems require learning content to be in the xAPI protocola. Core LRS, however, can support both xAPI and SCORM learning content.
